Master Coach - Byron Low with 25+ Years Coaching Experience. I believe that Coaching is one of the most effective ways of developing leadership in others; people matter and coaching works.


On April 23, 1910, Theodor Roosevelt gave a speech at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he said, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, and comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”


I really love this quote and I chose this as an exemplar in my first blog posting because it is an important quote to me and it helps illustrate how I view my life and how I think about the world and those I serve.


My thoughts on this very important quote:

  • Take the leap and get in there. Do you want to do something? Do you want to start something? What’s stopping you? It is not the critic nor the inner-critic who counts. It’s you that counts.
  • Taking risks can be messy. Is there something you really want to do but you don’t know where to begin? If you want to be dust-free, sweat-free and blood-free; do nothing and risk nothing.
  • Perfection can be an excuse. All realized dreams were at one time, a wish, a desire or a prayer. What if it is as simple as starting? Start by doing one thing.
  • It takes effort. If it’s something you have to do; meaning you can’t not do it then the amount of work isn’t that big of deal, right?
  • Living on purpose takes passion. Living our live with purpose gives our lives meaning. Do you want to live a life that is meaningful?
  • No regrets. It’s not about the reward. It’s about the life you live as you seek, strive, triumph, fail, and live wholeheartedly with the intent of being awake as you live your life. Living a life on purpose.

Writer, poet, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou said, “I am convinced that courage is the most important of all the virtues. Because without courage, you cannot practice any other virtue consistently. You can be kind for a while; you can be generous for a while; you can be just for a while, or merciful for a while, even loving for a while. But it is only with courage that you can be persistently and insistently kind and generous and fair.”

Living Life On Purpose

How can we be more courageous? Three thoughts:

  1. Let’s be ourselves. It’s what we know the best. Have you heard of Naval Ravikant? If you haven’t, check him out online ( He says this, “No one can compete with you on being you, no one can compete with me on being me, so when I think about what my profession, what my job, what my work is, it’s just being me.”
  2. Let’s be honest. One of my biggest motivators in life is to help others. If I can help, I will. Deep down, my intent is to help. I like how Brené Brown ( shares, “Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It's about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen.” I think we need to be more honest in lots of ways. But what about how we see our capacities and capabilities and how our perceptions impact our judgments and expectations?
  3. Let’s be interested. I’m a curious person who likes to listen and learn. I want share things that are interesting. Albert Einstein said, "The important thing is to not stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing." There’s so much that is fascinating about the world and sharing from this perspective makes it a little easier for me. I know that I want all of the above more in my life how about you?
